It’s a new year and our Global Lens films and GFI grant recipients are back in a big way, with screenings all over Europe this month for some of the biggest conferences of world cinema on the globe, at Berlin, Rotterdam and beyond. Without further adieu, here are this month’s headlines:

BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL: The Berlin International Film Festival is always host of a wide array of world and European premieres, and this year these premieres include those of six GFI grant recipients—likely our greatest showing at Berlinale to-date!

GRANTING: GFI Announces Summer 2012 Grant Recipients!

GFI’s newest grant recipients include four projects directed by women, and GFI’s first grants to the Dominican Republic, Guinea-Bissau and Serbia!

CINEMA DIGITAL SEOUL FILM FESTIVAL: World premieres by our grant recipients always make us feel a bit like proud family members, and among the premieres this month is that of DON’T EXPECT PRAISES (dir. Yang Jin, China, 2011 grant recipient)! The film makes its official debut at the Cinema Digital Seoul Film Festival, and we couldn’t be more excited for it!

INTERVIEW: Tolga Karaçelik on A Sincere Work

Rob Avila talks with Tolga Karaçelik about capturing the right chemical reaction on the set and on the screen in TOLL BOOTH…

TOLL BOOTH, the first Turkish film to receive a weeklong premiere at the New York Museum of Modern Art, is the debut feature of 31-year-old Istanbul native Tolga Karaçelik. It concerns the life and progressive collapse of a tollbooth attendant and bachelor named Kenan (played by the marvelous Serkan Ercan). A poet by longstanding practice and inclination, with a quick mind and generous spirit, Karaçelik studied law before coming to New York City to study filmmaking. It was back in New York, at the MoMA in January, that he sat down to talk about the genesis of his award-winning Toll Booth, the opening night film of the Global Film Initiative’s 2012 Global Lens series.

GRANTING: Summer 2011 Grantees Announced!

They submitted and we reviewed. Of course, what went into each process cannot be summed up in just a few words.

Nearly 100 films in various stages of production sent in applications, detailing their hard work, passion and vision. From every corner of the world—including first-time submissions from East Timor, Guatemala and Sri Lanka—filmmakers and producers mailed carefully-composed packages that contained the fruits of their labor (thankfully, they didn’t send the blood, sweat and tears shed in the process).

We went through each application (representing 44 nations in all) reading scripts, watching rough cuts, and writing detailed coverage of each film. It wasn’t an easy or obvious decision, but we did end up choosing ten exciting projects to award production funds, and are thrilled by the creativity and brilliance in each one.

Granting season at the GFI office is a time of excitement and inspiration, and after reading over many applications and screenplays seeking production funds, it often becomes a time of passionate debate! The choice of grantees is never an easy one, and this year was no different—the projects were truly some of the most unique and impressive we’ve seen yet.

Not surprisingly, many hours and days went into this cycle’s decisions, and in the end, we selected ten projects of which we’re very proud and delighted to support.

Rob Avila speaks with Algerian Actor, Director & Screenwriter Lyès Salem about his award-winning comedy, MASQUERADES

Thoughtful and good-humored, with leading-man looks, actor-filmmaker Lyes Salem was in the Bay Area recently to present Masquerades at the opening night of the Arab Film Festival, where he was greeted by a full house at the Castro Theatre, San Francisco’s beloved movie palace. A few days later, wearing a tourist’s camera around his neck, he arrived at the offices of the Global Film Initiative, distributor of the film in the United States, for a chat about his inspiration as a filmmaker, his life during and beyond Masquerades, and the role of humor in reaching an audience.

Becloud: Soul of a Nation?

Director Alejandro Gerber Bicecci and Rob Avila discuss Mexico and the psychology behind the filmmaker’s debut feature

Alejandro Gerber Bicecci was born in Mexico in 1977, the son of two Argentine psychoanalysts who left their country’s military dictatorship the year before for the relative freedom of Mexico City. Becloud (Vaho), Bicecci’s first feature film, is being distributed by Global Film Initiative and is part of GFI’s 2010 Global Lens series. Filmed in an unconventional and sophisticated manner that blends three distinct time periods together into a nearly seamless whole, the story concerns the coming-of-age of three teenagers, boyhood friends implicated in a violent act at their school many years before. Out of this small, neighborhood story from a marginal community—set against the backdrop of Iztapalapa’s annual Easter-week reenactment of the Passion—arises a resonant portrait of modern Mexican society.

The following interview with Bicecci took place in San Francisco just before the opening night premiere of Becloud at the 2010 Hola Mexico Film Festival, which was co-presented by the Global Film Initiative.
